Fefu and her friends by Maria Irene Fornes explores the female psyche and her place in a patriarchal society. Centering our approach around the question of whether a woman is safe or imprisoned inside her own house, we built a large-scale but minimalistic set design, inspired by artist Katarzyna Kobro’s spatial sculptures, that creates the feeling of an interactive house where characters move in and out of different rooms, revealing themselves through intimate encounters. A large video projection at the back of the living room brings on stage the outside world alongside the male presence — so far and yet too close.
